HOW TO IMPOVERISH THE ENVIRONMENT

Sometimes students behave inappropriately and unacceptably because the environment is providing too much stimulation. Over-stimulation at times can be just as frustrating as too little stimulation. Students can be overwhelmed by an environment that offers too many choices, much like a child on Christmas day who faces so many presents that he cannot enjoy any of the ones he opens just because of the anxiety of not knowing what is in the next box. This is especially true for students who have the central nervous system dysfunction called “hyperkinesis.”

Teachers in T.E.T. come up with ideas like the following to impoverish, at least temporarily, the environment of classrooms:

Darken the room.

Put down pieces of carpet where noisy activities take place.

Put away all materials except those to be used in the present activity.

Schedule the use of materials; limit their availability.

Schedule “quiet times.”

Install individual study areas.

Use earphones on audiovisual equipment.

Install room dividers, partitions.

Have students (teachers, too) remove shoes.

Use a “focusing” technique, such as television or videos.

Install a “meditation corner.”
